Clayton, NC (August 2, 2020) – One person was killed in a head-on crash that took place on US Highway 70 in Clayton on Saturday, August 1st. The crash happened around Noon near exit 320.
According to police and witnesses at the crash scene, a vehicle was traveling westbound on Highway 70 at a high rate of speed. The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer over the median and into the oncoming travel lanes. While in the opposite lane, the car collided head-on with a vehicle traveling eastbound on Highway 70. The driver of the second vehicle, 68-year-old Robert Lee Sanders, suffered critical injuries and later died as a result of the crash. The driver of the vehicle that caused the collision was taken to WakeMed with unidentified injuries.
The driver of the first vehicle has not been identified at this time and there is no further word on the cause of the collision. Charges are pending the outcome of the crash investigation, which is still ongoing at this time. There is no further information available.
