Craven County, NC (August 15, 2020) – Two Marines were involved in a crash that took place near Havelock on Thursday, August 13th. The crash happened on Lake Road, about a half-mile outside of the town.
Troopers from the North Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the scene of the accident. Based on initial reports, 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Devon Freeman was traveling on Lake Road at a high rate of speed when his vehicle left the roadway and traveled into a ditch before striking a tree. The car then flipped several times before coming to rest on the shoulder of the roadway. Freeman was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the crash scene. His passenger, who has not been identified, was taken to a CarolinaEast Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Both of the Marines involved were stationed at Cherry Point.
Troopers have not released any further details regarding the crash. An investigation is ongoing at this time.
We wish to offer our most sincere condolences to the family of Devon Freeman after this tragic accident in Craven County. Our thoughts are with the injured passenger and we hope for his complete and speedy recovery.
