Lumberton, NC – One Killed, One Hurt in Crash on N.C. 71

Lumberton, NC (August 24, 2020) – A 20-year-old woman from Pembroke was killed in a two-vehicle accident on North Carolina Highway 71 on Sunday, August 23rd. The crash happened around 7:42 a.m. about three miles south of Red Springs.

According to authorities, 20-year-old Julia Dawn Merritt was traveling southbound on N.C. 71 when her vehicle left the roadway. Merritt overcorrected when she tried to re-enter the highway and her car then crossed the center line where it collided head-on with a 2012 Chrysler passenger vehicle driven by 40-year-old John Garrett Broady, of Rockingham. Both cars then traveled off the roadway before coming to rest in a ditch.

Rescue workers arrived at the scene to provide aid to both drivers. Merritt was pronounced dead at the accident scene while Broady was taken to a local hospital. He was listed in stable condition with unknown injuries. The Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
