Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in North Carolina
There were almost 3,000 reported pedestrian accidents in North Carolina in 2018, with over 90% of accidents resulting in injuries to the pedestrian. A pedestrian has no means to protect themselves from the tremendous force and impact of a collision with a vehicle. Further, many pedestrian accidents occur so suddenly and unexpectedly that the pedestrian is unable to make any evasive maneuvers to avoid the crash. Unfortunately, many pedestrians are seriously hurt or lose their lives as a result. In 2018, North Carolina saw a 12.5% increase in the number of pedestrian deaths, with 225 deaths reported, compared to 200 in 2017. This number follows a troubling trend nationwide with an increasing number of pedestrian crashes and deaths.
If you have been hurt or affected by a North Carolina pedestrian accident, you should seek to protect your legal rights. While not every pedestrian crash is caused by a driver, many of them are. Drivers can cause a pedestrian accident due to distraction, impairment, speeding, and more. Many drivers are inattentive to the roadway and fail to see pedestrians until it is too late. Just a single second of distraction can lead to a catastrophic occurrence. In these situations, the pedestrian or their family should speak with an attorney in order to pursue compensation for the crash.
