Southern Pines, NC (October 29, 2020) – A 5-year-old child tragically lost his life in a crash that took place on U.S. 1 in Southern Pines. The accident took place on Tuesday, October 27th around 5:40 p.m. near the intersection with N. May Street.
According to police, an 18-wheeler and a Honda Pilot were traveling in the same direction when the 18-wheeler collided with the passenger side of the Pilot before coming to rest off of the roadway. Several onlookers rushed to the scene to aid the young boy and female driver who were trapped inside the vehicle.
When rescue crews arrived, they were able to extricate both occupants. The driver was taken to a local hospital where she was listed in serious condition. The boy was taken to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The truck driver was also taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, along with Cypress Point Fire & Rescue, and the North Carolina Highway Patrol all responded to the scene.
No further details have been released regarding the crash at this time.
