Fatal Car Accidents in North Carolina
Fatal car accidents take place across North Carolina every day. According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, there were 1,442 fatalities in North Carolina traffic accidents in 2019. This number represented an increase from the year before when the state reported 1,396 fatalities in traffic crashes. Many victims of fatal accidents are killed due to the negligence of another motorist. Speeding, reckless driving, impairment, and other negligent driving behaviors are often the cause of serious and fatal accidents on North Carolina’s roadways. Police must carefully investigate each accident in order to determine the cause and which driver should be held responsible.
If you have lost a loved one in a traffic crash, our thoughts are with you. There is certainly nothing more devastating or heartbreaking than the sudden loss of a family member, especially when your family member was killed by the negligence of another driver. Under North Carolina law, a victim’s next-of-kin, or personal representative, may be entitled to file a wrongful death claim in certain situations. These claims must be filed within two years of the date of death and can include claims for compensation based on lost wages, funeral bills, medical bills, loss of companionship, punitive damages, and more. These claims are complicated and should only be handled by an attorney with experience in this area.
