Wilmington, NC (January 17, 2021) – Police and rescue workers responded to the scene of a collision involving a fleeing driver in Wilmington on Friday, January 15th. The crash occurred along Market Street.
Deputies with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office were pursuing Cory Rayburn and trying to serve a felony warrant at a local hotel. Rayburn failed to comply with deputies and instead got into an SUV and fled the scene. As he traveled down Market Street at a high rate of speed, Rayburn crossed over a concrete median and collided head-on with another SUV. Rayburn was then apprehended by authorities. Two people inside the other SUV were injured in the accident and were transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition. The victims have not been identified at this time.
The eastbound lanes of Market Street were closed for nearly two hours as officials worked at the crash scene. Drivers were advised to find alternate routes of travel.
