Shallotte, NC (February 9, 2021) – A 67-year-old man from Bolivia was killed in a bicycle crash that took place in Brunswick County on Sunday, February 7th. The crash happened on U.S. Highway 17 near Shallotte.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Mitchell Wayne Griffith was riding his bicycle southbound on U.S. 17 when he was hit by a white 2009 BMW. The BMW driver, who has not been identified, fled the scene before officers could arrive. Troopers later located the driver and arrested him in connection with the crash. Griffith died at the accident scene. There is no word on the events that caused the accident and police have not said which charges the driver is facing.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing. There are no further details available.
