Lumberton, NC (February 24, 2021) – The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the scene of a crash in Lumberton on Wednesday, February 24th. The accident took place on 7th Street at the intersection with Roberts Avenue.
According to troopers, the Lumberton Police Department was investigating a suspect and officers were pursuing a vehicle in connection with the investigation. The driver of the vehicle, 34-year-old Michael Smith, fled from officers and led them on a chase. Smith’s car was eventually involved in a crash with four other vehicles. Smith died from injuries sustained in the crash while the others involved suffered undisclosed injuries. None of the victims have been identified at this time. Police advised motorists to avoid the area.
