Bicycle Accidents in North Carolina
Bicycle accidents are not as common as crashes involving other types of vehicles. Each year across North Carolina, there are about 1,000 accidents involving bicycles compared to nearly 300,000 involving cars, trucks, motorcycles, and other vehicles. Just because bicycle crashes are not as common does not mean that they are not often serious in nature. About 20 people were killed in North Carolina bicycle accidents in 2018 and hundreds more suffered injuries. Common types of bicycle accident injuries include broken bones, facial injuries, head trauma, scarring, soft tissue injuries, and more. Many bicycle accidents in North Carolina are caused by negligent drivers who fail to see the bicyclist until it is too late to avoid a collision. Although drivers are legally required to share the road with bicyclists, many motorists become impatient and attempt to pass the bicycle before it is safe to do so.
