Craven County, NC (June 10, 2021) – A Craven County firefighter was killed in a crash that took place on Thursday afternoon near James City. The crash took place around 1:45 p.m. on US Highway 70.
At the time of the crash, the firefighter’s unit was responding to reports of a separate car accident in the 2200 block of Brices Creek Road. While the unit was on the way to the crash scene, their truck was involved in a separate accident. Rescue crews responded to the area and extricated the affected firefighter from the vehicle and provided medical care. He was taken to a hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. At this time, there is no information on the events that led up to the accident and the cause of the collision is unknown. It is also not known if any other vehicles were involved in the crash. The firefighter’s identity has not been released. Motorists were advised to avoid the area if possible.
Troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol are currently investigating the collision. There is no word on whether any charges are expected to be filed. No further information is available at this time.
