Oak Ridge, NC (June 28, 2021) – Troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol have identified the two teenagers who were killed in a drunk driving crash on Friday night in Oak Ridge. The collision occurred around 7:00 p.m. on Williard Road near North Carolina Highway 150.
According to troopers, 18-year-old Jacob Stevens, of Greensboro, was driving a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck southbound on Williard Road when he lost control of the truck, causing it to go off the roadway and strike a mailbox and a trash can. Stevens then overcorrected his vehicle, causing it to cross the centerline of the roadway and strike a utility pole before overturning. Two passengers in the truck, Jefferey Jones, of High Point, and Zach Williamson, of Greensboro, were killed in the crash. Both were 19 years old. Stevens suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital before being released.
Following an investigation, troopers determined that Stevens was impaired. He was charged with two counts of felony death by motor vehicle and one count of causing serious injury by vehicle after a third passenger sustained serious injuries.
No further information has been released at this time.
We wish to offer our most sincere condolences to the families of the two teenagers who were killed in this tragic drunk driving crash in Oak Ridge.
Drunk Driving Accidents in North Carolina
Each year in North Carolina, there are thousands of crashes involving drivers who are impaired. Some of these drivers are impaired due to alcohol and others are impaired because of drug use. Regardless of the cause, impaired drivers account for thousands of serious injuries and approximately 500 fatalities on our roadways each year. In total, drunk driving crashes in North Carolina cause about one-third of all total reported traffic fatalities in our state. Crashes involving impaired drivers often take place at high speeds and with little reaction time. As a result, they tend to be more serious and cause more catastrophic consequences than other types of accidents.
If you have lost a loved one to a North Carolina DUI crash, you are no doubt feeling alone and helpless. During this time, it is vital to have an attorney by your side who can help you and will stand up for your rights. There is nothing more selfish or careless that a driver can do than to make a decision to get behind the wheel of a vehicle after they have had too much to drink. These drivers should be held accountable for their actions to the fullest extent of the law when they cause harm to others.
