Fletcher, NC (November 18, 2021) – Multiple emergency response units were on the scene of a home explosion that left two people severely injured on Wednesday, November 17th.
At about 1:00 p.m., the Henderson County dispatch fielded several calls reporting an explosion in the area of Kyles Creek Road in Fletcher.
Upon their arrival at the home on Morrill Drive, situated near the top of a small mountain, rescuers located two men, father and son, both of whom had sustained serious burns and lacerations in the residential explosion.
Two Mountain Air Medical Ambulances were requested and both victims were transported to the burn ward of a regional trauma center.
A neighbor reported that the gas company had been out to fill their tanks just a day or two prior to the explosion. The victims reported being down in the basement, where the gas and hot water tanks are located when they noticed not only the smell of gas but observed the water tank making unusual noises as well. Just moments later, the explosion occurred.
Crews were on the scene for nearly 10 hours following the incident. The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, Henderson County Fire Marshal’s Office, Fletcher Fire & Rescue, and surrounding fire departments all responded.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Gas Explosion Injuries in North Carolina
In North Carolina, natural gas is a primary source of energy. It is used every day in office buildings, stores, and by your neighbors. Eight municipal natural gas systems and five local distribution companies all transport natural gas across 35,000 miles of pipeline to industrial, commercial, and residential customers throughout the state. In addition, propane gas, also known as liquefied petroleum gas, is sold by countless retailers.
Unfortunately, both LP gas and natural gas are extremely explosive. A spark, a flame, and even static electricity can cause explosions. When gas is ignited in a confined space, such as a shop, a house, or even a hole in the ground, the resulting blast can produce enough force to raze houses, level entire buildings, and main or kill anyone in the vicinity.
Gas explosions most often occur due to leaks from the distribution lines that deliver propane or natural gas to commonplace appliances such as stoves, furnaces, and heaters. When this gas mixes with the air, particularly in a closed area, the pressure build-up, combined with an ignition source, results in an explosion.
Another common cause of gas explosions is negligence in the manufacturing, design, or maintenance of a gas appliance, or a gas distribution or storage system. This includes negligence in the installation of commercial and residential gas appliances due to contractors violating electrical, gas, or building codes.
