Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in North Carolina
North Carolina is quickly becoming a very dangerous state for pedestrians. The number of fatal pedestrian accidents in North Carolina has risen incrementally over the past several years. In 2017, there were 200 pedestrian deaths in our state. In 2018, the number rose to 225, and in 2019 it rose again to 231. An astonishing 10% of all pedestrians who were involved in a crash with a motor vehicle were killed as a result of the accident. In addition to fatalities, there were also 2,059 injuries reported due to pedestrian accidents in North Carolina. Many of the injuries to pedestrians are severe in nature, requiring expensive and long-term medical care and causing physical disabilities that can severely impact the victim’s life.
With most pedestrian crashes resulting in injuries, it is important to understand what rights you may have following a pedestrian accident in our state. North Carolina law allows the victim of a pedestrian crash to seek recovery in some circumstances. Your right to receive compensation will depend on who was at fault for the accident. Under North Carolina law, a victim who was injured by the negligence of another person can pursue payment for their pain and suffering caused by the accident, lost wages, medical bills, and potentially punitive damages. A close investigation of the crash and the surrounding circumstances may be needed to determine how the accident occurred.
