Currituck, NC (September 3, 2021) – An 11-year-old girl was seriously hurt in a crash that took place in Currituck County. The accident originally happened on Monday, August 30th on U.S. Highway 158.
According to a report, the girl was crossing US 158 after leaving Currituck Middle School. As she crossed the street with her brother, the girl realized that she had dropped an object in the roadway. As she went back to retrieve the item, she was struck by a car that was traveling southbound on the highway. The girl was airlifted to a hospital in Norfolk with serious injuries. The driver remained at the scene following the crash.
Following an investigation, officers determined that alcohol played a role in the collision. Marijuana was also found in the driver’s vehicle. The driver, later identified as Daniel Deweese, was charged with driving while impaired and speeding in a school zone. He was taken to the Currituck County Jail.
The victim was not identified. No further information has been released.
