Durham, NC (July 12, 2022) – The Durham Police Department was called to the scene of a deadly motorcycle crash over the weekend. The accident took place in the 3400 block of Hillsborough Road near a Coca-Cola bottling plant.
According to a police report, a 27-year-old man was riding his motorcycle in the 3400 block of the road. At the same time, a 2008 Hyundai Sonata was traveling in the opposite direction on Hillsborough. The driver of the Santa Fe made a left turn in front of the motorcycle and caused a collision. The motorcyclist was critically injured and was later pronounced dead. Following the accident, authorities identified the deceased victim as Andrew Miller, of Durham.
After a further investigation, police charged Awalom Teklehimanot with driving while impaired, felony death by motor vehicle, and failure to yield the right of way. Police believe that both speed and impairment were the causes of the accident. There is no word on whether any other injuries were sustained.
No further information is available at this time.
We would like to offer our thoughts and condolences to the family of Andrew Miller following this fatal motorcycle accident in Durham.
Motorcycle Accidents in North Carolina
According to statistics, there are more than 4,000 motorcycle collisions every year in North Carolina. These crashes result in a substantial number of injuries as more than 3,000 people are hurt when these accidents take place. The odds of being hurt in a North Carolina motorcycle crash are greater than 80%. Sadly, about 200 motorcyclists also lose their lives every year when an accident occurs.
Each North Carolina motorcycle accident must be carefully investigated by police. In many crashes, the motorcyclist is an innocent victim who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Drivers often fail to see motorcyclists or fail to yield to them. They will then drive into their path and cause a catastrophic collision. In the instance where a motorcyclist is hurt or killed due to the negligence of another driver, then the laws of our state may allow the victim to pursue a personal injury claim.
