Greenville, NC (July 29, 2020) – Police were on the scene of a four-vehicle crash in Greenville on Monday, July 27th. The crash took place around 2:10 p.m. in the 600 block of Arlington Boulevard and was caused by a driver fleeing from officers.
According to reports, the Greenville Police Department received a call regarding vehicle larceny at a convenience store on 500 North Green Street. Officers located the vehicle as it traveled at a high rate of speed near Hooker Road and Arlington Boulevard. The vehicle continued to speed through the area and officers abandoned the chase. However, as the vehicle entered the intersection with Evans Street, the driver caused a crash with three other cars.
The suspect was identified as 35-year-old Joel Anthony Barkman of Newport. One of the other drivers involved was hurt in the crash and was transported to Vidant Medical Center for treatment of serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Police are still investigating the crash but expect to file charges against Barkman shortly. No one else involved in the accident has been identified at this time.
