Iredell County, NC (December 30, 2020) – Several people were injured in a car accident that took place in Iredell County on Wednesday, December 30th. The crash happened in the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 near mile marker 147 at the Stamey Farm Road exit.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a 2003 Chevrolet S-10 was traveling westbound on I-40 when the vehicle ran off the road to the left and crashed into a guardrail before striking a Subaru Forester that was also traveling westbound. A 2010 Freightliner swerved to avoid a subsequent collision and also collided with the guardrail before overturning in the travel lane and spilling its contents in the roadway.
The driver of the Chevy, 26-year-old Derek Scott Frye of Wichita, Kansas was taken to Iredell Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. The Subaru driver, 62-year-old Robert Lee Grant of Statesville, was taken to Iredell Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. A passenger in Grant’s car was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. The Freightliner driver, 37-year-old Steven Michael Knight of Lynchburg, VA was also treated for minor injuries. No other injuries were reported in the accident.
The highway remained closed for about two hours, causing extensive delays at the scene. Motorists were urged to use caution and to find alternate routes of travel.
Troopers charged Frye with failure to maintain lane control in connection with the crash. There is no additional information available at this time.
