Madison County, NC (June 12, 2020) – A state trooper and the driver of a box truck were hurt in a crash that took place on Friday in Madison County. The crash happened in the eastbound lanes of I-26 just before 1:00 p.m.
Officials say that Trooper Murico L. Stephens was conducting a traffic stop when his car was struck by a box truck on I-26. Stephens was inside the vehicle when the crash took place. Both Stephens and the box truck driver suffered undisclosed injuries as a result of the accident and both were taken to Mission Hospital in Asheville to be treated. The driver of the stopped vehicle was not injured.
The box truck driver has not been identified and it is not clear if charges will be filed. The crash remains under investigation.
