Madison, NC – Sharon Stephens-McCandless Killed in Crash on U.S. 220
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol was called to the accident scene. According to a report from troopers, 76-year-old Sharon Stephens-McCandless was driving a vehicle in the northbound lanes of U.S. 220. At the same time, a tractor-trailer was traveling southbound on Highway 220 when the driver attempted to make a U-turn into the northbound lanes. As the driver turned, the tractor-trailer collided with the vehicle driven by Stephens-McCandless and pushed it into a guardrail. Stephens-McCandless was pronounced dead at the accident scene. The tractor-trailer driver was not identified.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing. No charges have been filed at this time. The road remained closed until approximately 1:00 a.m.
