Fatal Car Accidents in North Carolina
Unfortunately, fatal crashes in North Carolina are on the rise. In 2021, there were 1,755 fatalities reported in accidents on our state’s roadways. This number is believed to be the highest on record, more than the previous mark set in 2007. In 2020, approximately 1,500 people were killed in reported accidents. The explanations for the increase are varied but it is likely that drivers are failing to heed traffic laws and are speeding, driving recklessly, or driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In many serious and fatal accidents, there is some negligent or reckless driving behavior that is responsible for the outcome.
There is nothing more devastating or heartbreaking than the loss of a loved one in a traffic accident. This is especially true if your family member was not at fault in the crash. If you have experienced a sudden tragedy, you could have certain legal rights. North Carolina wrongful death law allows the victim’s next-of-kin to bring a lawsuit against a driver responsible for the untimely death. These claims have complicated legal requirements and must generally be filed within two years of the victim’s passing. In this situation, it is always best to speak with an experienced lawyer who can ensure that the case is properly handled.
