Raleigh, NC (July 23, 2021) – One man was killed and six others sustained injuries in a single-car crash on I-40 Friday morning. The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. on Interstate 40 at mile marker 302.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the scene of the collision. According to troopers, 28-year-old William Gillespie, of Durham, was driving a 2002 Toyota Avalon when he ran off the left side of the road and collided with a buffer in the median. Gillespie suffered minor injuries in the accident and was taken to WakeMed Hospital for treatment. One of Gillespie’s passengers, 63-year-old Sherman Cannady, of Dunn, died in the accident. A 29-year-old female passenger sustained minor injuries while four children, ages 3 through 8, were treated at WakeMed for non-life-threatening injuries. The left lane of the road was closed while police investigated. Motorists were advised to find alternate routes of travel if possible.
Troopers charged Gillespie with misdemeanor death by vehicle, reckless driving, driving with a revoked license, and a child restraint violation. No further information has been released at this time.
