North Carolina DWI Accidents
Impaired driving crashes in North Carolina continue to cause major problems for motorists. The North Carolina Department of Transportation maintains statistics on the number of DWI crashes that occur each year across our state. In 2019, the number of alcohol-related reported accidents was 11,475. As a result of these crashes, 7,426 people were hurt and 412 were killed. The chances of being hurt in a crash involving an impaired driver are higher than in an accident where no one involved is impaired. Drunk drivers lack the reaction time and the judgment that is necessary to safely operate a vehicle. As a result, DWI accidents often occur at high speeds as the impaired driver takes little or no evasive action to avoid the collision.
Under North Carolina law, drunk drivers are legally responsible for the damages that they cause. In many cases, the damage is significant. These drivers can also be held responsible for punitive damages which is a special category of legal damages that allows an injured victim to recover money in order to punish the conduct of the careless driver. In addition, victims can also seek reimbursement for their medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and possibly more. In this situation, it is always best to consult with an experienced attorney before making any decisions regarding your case.
