Roanoke Rapids, NC (July 16, 2020) – Troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to a serious crash involving a semi-truck on Thursday in Roanoke Rapids. The accident was reported on Interstate 95, near North Carolina Highway 903 at 2:30 p.m.
Troopers arrived at the scene just after the crash took place. Officials began investigating the crash once they were at the scene. According to initial reports, a semi-truck was traveling on I-95 when, for unknown reasons, the driver lost control. The truck veered off the roadway to the rights and traveled about 500 feet before it crashed into a set of trees.
Rescue workers responded to assist the victims who were hurt in the collision. The driver was trapped inside the truck and taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. A passenger was also transported with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening. At this time, it is not clear what caused the driver to leave the roadway.
The crash was under investigation for approximately two hours, causing significant delays at the scene. The roadway was reopened around 4:15 p.m.
