Sanford, NC (March 16, 2021) – A woman from Sanford died in a crash that took place on Monday afternoon. The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 1 near Tramway Road.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, 86-year-old Lois Simmons was pulling out of a Food Lion grocery store at the intersection around 12:30 p.m. At the same time, a deputy with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office was pursuing a vehicle driven by 19-year-old Clifton Donnell McIver, of Sanford. As McIver sped through the intersection he collided with Simmons’ vehicle. McIver’s car then crossed the center line and collided with two other vehicles before catching fire and bursting into flames.
Simmons was rushed to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. McIver was later apprehended by officers and was charged with fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle possession of a stolen firearm and several traffic violations. There were no other injuries reported.
An investigation is ongoing. No additional information is available.
