Smithfield, NC (May 27, 2022) – The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the scene of a car accident with injuries on Friday afternoon, May 27th. The crash happened around 4:00 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 near exit 319.
According to a report from troopers, a man was driving the wrong way on I-40 when he attempted to make a U-turn and was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of the highway. The man caused a collision that involved at least five other vehicles. Paramedics responded to the scene and transported at least three people to a local hospital for treatment. The injuries were described as non-life-threatening. Drivers at the scene experienced major delays due to the accident. Motorists were urged to find alternate routes of travel if possible.
The crash is still under investigation at this time. There is no word on whether any charges are expected to be filed in connection with the crash.
