Wilmington, NC (August 21, 2020) – An 89-year-old woman was killed and a 93-year-old male sustained injuries in a two-vehicle crash that took place in Wilmington on Tuesday, August 18th. The crash happened on Southerland Avenue at the intersection with Wrightsville Avenue.
According to the Wilmington Police Department, Jean Rogers was operating a BMW when she arrived at the intersection of Southerland and Wrightsville. As Rogers got to the intersection, she pulled out onto Wrightsville. As she maneuvered into traffic, her car was hit by a GMC Yukon traveling westbound on Wrightsville.
Rogers sustained critical injuries and was rushed to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where she later died. Her passenger, a 93-year-old man, sustained multiple broken ribs and is currently in the hospital receiving treatment. His identity has not been released at this time. There is no word on whether the Yukon driver or anyone else was injured as a result of the crash.
Police are still conducting an investigation into the accident and have not said whether any charges will be filed against the driver of the Yukon. There is no additional information available at this time.
