Fatal Accidents in North Carolina
Drunk driving crashes in North Carolina continue to cause major problems for motorists on our roadways. In a recent year, there was a total of 11,345 DWI collisions reported across our state. These same accidents had a very high rate of injury and even death, with a total of 7,602 injuries and 411 fatalities reported as a result. In fact, North Carolina DWI accidents account for about 28.5% of all reported traffic fatalities, with over half of these deadly collisions being caused by a lane departure.
Following this trend, we would expect to, unfortunately, see a large number of innocent victims involved in DWI crashes. Many of those who are killed or injured in drunk driving accidents in North Carolina are simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Impaired drivers lack the ability to appreciate the dangers of driving. Additionally, their reaction time is slow, making it harder for them to avoid other vehicles and to slow down to prevent a crash from happening. The results are often catastrophic.
If you or your loved one have been affected by a drunk driver on our roadways, you have important legal rights. If the crash was not your fault, you could be entitled to compensation including payment of lost wages, medical and funeral bills, damages for loss of affection and companionship, and, in some cases, an award of punitive damages to punish the other driver’s reckless behavior.
